Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a help manual for the Novel Factory?

You can find the help manual for the Online version here:

You can find the Windows Desktop version help manual here:

We are constantly updating the manual to add new instructions and improve the existing ones - we welcome feedback on any areas you would like us to focus on, and if you find any out of date bits, please do let us know.

I bought a licence for Windows Desktop but I didn't receive my activation details.

Our system emails you your activation details automatically on purchase, so you should receive them pretty much instantly. However, it's relatively common for our emails to get caught in spam filters. First port of call is you check your junkmail box. If it's not there, then you can have your activation details resent via this form.

If you still haven't received them, please email us at, but please whitelist our address first, because if our activation emails are getting blocked by your email provider, there's a good chance our regular emails will too.

If you don't receive a reply from us, you can be guaranteed that it's because our emails have been blocked, because we reply to all our user enquiries within two working days, and usually within less than a day.

In this case, please contact us via Facebook or Twitter so we can reach you that way instead.

Can you use the Desktop and Online versions simultaneously?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to easily sync work between the Online and Desktop versions. We are working towards this as a long term plan, but it is not a trival task, so we currently can't make estimates for when this will be available.

Therefore, we recommend users to stick with either the Online or Desktop version.

I'm an existing Desktop user and I want to switch to the Online version... How does that work?

The Desktop and Online versions are seperate products on different licences. The Desktop version is based on a one-off payment which gives you a lifetime licence for the software, including updates within the version.

The Online version requires ongoing services to run and host, so is based on a subscription model.

So if you are an existing Desktop user wishing to move to Online, you need to sign up for a monthly or annual subscription for Online. However, if you sign up for an annual licence, you are entitled to a discount equal to the value you paid for the Desktop licence - essentially resulting in your Desktop licence being free.

If you would like to do this, please contact us and once we have confirmed your Desktop licence details we will provide you with a coupon code.

I sent you a message but got no reply.

We reply to all genuine enquiries, so if you haven't received a response within two working days, either we didn't get your email, or our reply was blocked by your email provider. Please try contacting us via Facebook or Twitter instead, or whitelist our email address.

I contacted you via Facebook or Twitter and haven't had a reply.

We don't check our social media feeds as often as our email, so it may take a little longer to get a response, but we do check it fairly regularly and do respond to all genuine enquiries.

How many computers can I use the Novel Factory on?

As many as you like. The licences are per user, not per computer, so you can install the Desktop version or open the Online version on as many machines as you wish, as long as it's for your personal use only.

How much does it cost?

The Windows Desktop version costs $39.99 (payment is available in a range of currencies).

The Online version varies, depending on which Plan you sign up for and whether you subscrinbe monthly of annually. Full details can be found in 'Plan' under the user menu in the top right hand corner when you are logged into your trial account or here. Sign up for a trial account here.

Does it work on a Mac?

The desktop version is for Windows only, but the online version works on any platform with an Internet browser.

If you're only interested in running the Windows Desktop version on a Mac, it is possible to use special software that allows you to run Windows applications on a Mac, some of our users do that. You can read more about it on our forum here.

I've already written a book in a different program, can I import it into the Novel Factory?

Yes, you can import your existing manuscript into the Novel Factory from a Word, Richtext, OpenOffice or HTML document. By using delimiters, the Novel Factory can automatically split your novel into scenes, and even associate characters and locations with each scene.

What if I use the trial then decide I don’t like it – will my work be lost?

Nope. You can export all your work to a Word or Richtext document.

What operating systems is this novel writing software compatible with?
