The Ultimate World Building Template & Questionnaire (175 questions)

175 Powerful World Building Questions

This World Building Questionnaire has been put together to help fantasy writers and roleplayers create in-depth worlds for their stories and characters.

The questions have been split into categories and subcategories for ease of use.

The main categories are:

  • Geography and Nature
  • Population and Politics
  • Culture
  • Magic and Technology

Within those high level groups you will find subcategories such as Weather, Education, Social Rules and Origins.

This categorisation is neither perfect nor comprehensive, and in many cases questions could appear in more than one category.

If you have ideas for additional questions you think we should add - let us know!

About Using the World Building Questionnaire

The World Building Template is intended to be more of a jumping off point than an exam paper.

Rather than methodically answering each question in turn, feel free to dip in and jump around. And you may find answering one question sends you down a happy rabbit hole that you don't emerge from for days.

Please feel free to use and share the questions, though we do ask you link back to us and credit appropriately.

And if you think this worldbuilding template is good, just wait till you see the Novel Factory.
